Paul was dus de hele oorlogstijd geïnterneerd gebleven. Hoewel de bevrijding plaats vond in mei 1945 kon Paul pas op 3 augustus terugkeren, want de oorlog met Japan was nog niet beëindigd. Hij had ondertussen wel even in Schotland verbleven. Permeke was heel gehecht aan het gezinsleven. \nRond 1945 bezocht Pierre Devos herhaaldelijk het atelier van Permeke. Hij huwde zijn dochter Beaty.
